Task 9

The following pictures show a collection of all my colour and surface visual library work.

I found creating my colour and surface visual library quite simple and easy but some designs took longer than i expected but i still kept my work on a schedule i was happy with.

Task 8

Collection of samples scanned and photographed

These pictures combined show my work from start to finish

Task 7

Evaluation

To create this type of model does not take a short amount of time to create. This model being the longest it took me to make and a lot of planning beforehand which without could have ended with my model collapsing. A piece like this takes a lot of work and gravity and weight affected the success of this type of model. I needed to add more  supporting materials such as wire. Despite this taking a long time to produce and me getting quite annoyed during the process, I am most pleased with this model compared to the rest due to the amount of detail in shape I was able to capture.

The wire model was difficult to make but is effective because its light weight and won't break if dropped unlike the other models, this model is much less fragile. Wire modeling is great because of the ability to re-arrange the wires positioning at anytime. Overall a great type of model.
This model can turn out great but because the model is flimsy and not as strong as the paper mache model this type of model gets out shined by the paper mache model.
Being able to create things like springs for legs is a great option to be be able to do with the wire model, gives you the ability to be more creative.
The model is quite flimsy which is a problem with this wire model but overall the wire model is great for creativity and is a quick project to make.

This clay model was super easy to make with the clay being easy to manipulate to create the shapes i wanted. The clay model is very soft at first which makes it fantastic as a modelling material but after a few days the material becomes as solid as a rock which means it cannot be manipulated anymore. A major problem with making a model with clay is the fact that even though its solid it can still break quite easily if dropped.
Overall great but if broken would be a lot of time wasted.
As you can see in this picture i was able to add a nice texture last minute which is a huge pro when using this material.
The final result of the clay model is hard and strong but can be broken into many pieces if dropped and this is unavoidable. Before the material hardens through this material is soft and has a close resemblance to play dough.

Task 6

The Card board was flimsy and needed wire to help support it.

This was where i starting with my model by cutting out a hole from cardboard using a cutting knife.
Cardboard could be difficult to cut into but this is understandable because it means the material is stronger.

This image shows the cardboard cut outs i made to tape together to create the main body shape. I cut them out in the same shape i just change the size measurements so the shape of my mini beast would seem more realistic.
This material could be a pain because if i didn't cut the shape out correctly i would have to grab a new piece and start over.

These pictures show the cardboard cut outs taped together. This took a lot of tape because of the weight of my mini beast.
The cardboard material can be great when held together, they create one object not just multiple objects stuck together.

Held together the cardboard material is strong and durable.

These pictures show the eyes/ears being attached to the body using masking tape.
The material was strong enough to even hold up other pieces of material without using tape.

This picture shows the holes i made so i could slip the wire through for my mini beasts legs. I created these holes using a screw driver.
The material used was quite easy to drill into which makes this material great.

This picture shows the wire through the holes i created.
I found that balancing became an issue with the materials used but i managed to get it to work.
The fact i couldnt make the holes smaller just bigger in the material used was annoying, this meant i had to use tape to hold the wire going through the holes in place.

This picture shows the tail made from cardboard held together by masking tape.
The cardboard resisted gravity quite well but i still needed to had some tape just in case.

This picture shows my beast covered in paper mashe and then painted with white acrylic.
As you can see the tail also broken because it didn't have another support.
The cardboard is great because is can have other materials added onto it to then apply paint.

This picture shows my mini beast completely covered with white acrylic and i also fixed the tail by adding wire to support the weight.
I also rearranged the legs to look more realistic.
The benefit I found from using wire is that I can easily reshape.
The material is quite solid and can hold itself really well.

The wire was very weak which was easy to manipulate but meant i had to use thicker wire fr the legs to hold it up.

This picture shows how I started my wire model.
I began by creating 2 round wire shapes shaped in a similar design as my other model.
Wire is great because i can reshape the material easily.

This picture shows the wire connected using extra wire.
Wire is strong and resilient to gravity which means i can have a nice looking model unlike the cardboard model which required a whole lot of tape.

This picture shows even more wire connected. I had to connect a lot of support wire so it would hold together. I found that if I didn't it would hold its shape very well.
To prevent my wire model from reshaping if squashed i added supporting wire which is a great option to be able to do with a wire model.

This image shows my wire model standing up with springs for legs which i made by wrapping wire around a paint brush. I found that balancing became an issue with this technique but i managed to get it to work.
being able to create things like springs for legs is a great option to be be able to do with the wire model, gives you the ability to be more creative.

This image shows the tail which was the final thing i added to the wire model.
The model is quite flimsy which is a problem with this wire model but overall the wire model is great for creativity and is a quick project to make.

The clay effected the insect because it was too heavy and needed wire to help hold it together.

This is how i began making my clay model. I created the eyes/ears first so i knew how big i want my model to be. This helps me create the shape of the body next which i based the size off using the eyes/ears.
The clay model has a very nice texture and is fantastic because of its reshaping ability and that you can add patterns at will.

This is my model together.
As you can see the eyes/ears are connected in which I used wire through to hold into place. I also used the same wire material as the legs for this model because I limed the way the material looked for my other model.

You can see in this picture that my work still needed some shaping work with the legs and such which fixed at a later date. I had to re-wet the model every time i want to reshape the material which was a pain.

i forgot the add the tail to i added in last minute using a wire as a base inside of it to hold it into position.

This is my finished clay sample. I added some detail to it also last minute using a pen.
As you can see in this picture i was able to add a nice texture last minute which is a huge pro when using this material.
The final result of the clay model is hard and strong but can be broken into many pieces if dropped and this is unavoidable. Before the material hardens through this material is soft and has a close resemblance to play dough.

Task 5

I found creating my work quite simple just some design took a lot longer than i expected which caused problems but ultimately this was fine i just needed to do other designs faster to make up for lost time.

I found this type of reproduction technique the best because i could consistently reproduce the same image in different colours which led to different designs.

Task 4

Final A3 colour mixed media illustration

In my final A3 colour illustration I decided to use the printing method using neoprene. This is because I found this to be very effective and efficient, I also like the fact it doesn't cover the whole image when printing leaving patches of blank spaces which I like because I can use this to my advantage when im adding other materials. After I printed my mini beast using neoprene block printing I filled in the blank spaces with regular black ink from a pen which I then smudged using water to give a fade affect, it also blended into the blue from the neoprene printing making it a darker blue.

Once my piece had dried I added some white ink to bring back out the light blue from the Neoprene block printing which had been lost slightly in the black ink smudging. This is what white ink is great for bringing out light colours by using dark ones.

I chose to use Neoprene block printing as my main design choice because I like that if I don't like the print then I can simply print a new one.

Task 3

These are primary colours that create secondary colours, this picture shows how i used yellow and blue o make green and how i used yellow and red to make orange.

These are three different methods to get effects for my future projects.

This is a combination of water colour

This is Indian ink mixed with water and resist by using clue and oil pastel

The first picture is an showcase of the shading effect with a pencil using different weight.
The other two are charcoal but one has lines across.

These are a showcase of colour combinations like yellow and red with a cotton bud to make orange and yellow and blue also with a cotton bud to make green. I also used this method to make purple with red and blue. I used the colour blue and create a fade effect using white acrylic i did the same with red and pink.

These three pictures are showcases of the effect of charcoal they are all a smudge effect but one has smudged dark lines across and one has rubbed out lines across.

The first picture is a showcase of consistent weighted wavy lines with fade and the second is continuous varied weight lines.

This first image is white acrylic put on using a sponge. The second is the same but will coffee splatted on with a toothbrush for effect.

The first is a combination of two acrylics black and white to make grey. I smudged it in with my finger. The second picture is tea and coffee.

This picture shows the mixture of the two primary colours red and blue to create purple.

This picture shows the textures Indian ink can produce

this pictures shows the zig zag technique to create texture and also the chevron technique to create another texture. This picture also shows how glue resists water colour and also a shading effect with different weights to make a fade.

This picture shows the squiggle texture method and the 3 way wave texture method. Next to them are two picture made with oil pastel but using the texture methods have a texture on made with a sharp stick.

This first two pictures show texture methods and the next two are shading methods with rub out effects.

This picture shows a wave created with Indian ink with a fade. The other two are light and heavy charcoal examples which have been rubbed out for line effects.

These two pictures show the effects off coffee, tea, White acrylic with a sponge and finally the combination of white and black acrylic.

This picture shows texture methods like the blunt short bursts, continuous varied weight figure of eight and varied weight fade with a pencil.

This picture shows water colour with lines over them for cool effect.

This picture shows newspaper with white acrylic on it and grey acrylic splatted on with a sponge with some black lines.

This picture shows the effect of resists like string and paper against water colour.

This picture shows white acrylic splatted on paper with a sponge and the effects of weak and strong coffee.

This is a mini beast made with water colour, oil pastel and white ink.
These combined create a cool affect.

This is a mini beast created using water colour, black ink which combined with the water colour to create a shadow affect. I added pencil once the water colour dried to add some nice patterns.

This mini beast was created using Indian ink which gives a extremely heavy ink affect to my piece.
The rest of my piece is oil pastel and felt tip.

This mini beast is created using a mixture a oil pastel which was scratched away using a tooth pick to give my piece a nice pattern. i also used felt tip and ink. I smudged to oil pastel to give a different affect to my piece.

This is a mini beast created using oil pastel partially smudged  and partially not smudged together.
I also used pencil smudged and not smudged.

This mini beast example was created using oil pastel combined smudged and not smudged also scratched and in different pasterns and shapes. I added felt tip and pencil to add details.

This picture shows the collection i gathered when i was testing the neoprene printing. I liked neoprene printing the most because if i made a mistake or didn't like the colour i could start again with little hassle.

As you can see in this image i can easily reproduce this type of design which is very helpful.
